After all the administration, education, training, drilling, and responding, we love having the opportunity to serve the community in more light-hearted ways.
We just love polishing up our trucks and taking them for a slow ride around town.
Every September, we have the privilege of participating in the Osseo Lion's Roar parade. All of the trucks make an appearance in the parade, driven by active and retired firefighters and assisted by family members in all of the obligatory waving and candy throwing. Many firefighters also help out by controlling traffic at intersections along the parade route.
Then, in October--usually the Saturday before Halloween--we polish the trucks up again to escort the kids of Osseo down Central Avenue to show off their Halloween costumes. When they reach Boerboom Park, they are greeted by volunteer Lion's Club members, who distribute bags of candy.
One last time for the year, we shine up the trucks, stop at the north pole, and escort Santa Clause himself down Central Avenue in Osseo to Boerboom park where there's apple cider, hot cocoa, a crackling fire, and a crowd of anxious kids waiting. After the lighting of the trees, he settles in to hear a few wish lists...
This year we were asked to help control traffic at intersections along the route of the first annual Osseo Marching Band Festival. 14 high school marching bands, the Osseo alumni marching band, and a marine band all participated.
Also, we are often invited to participate in the parades of nearby communities and have a great time doing so.
Easter Egg Hunt
Each year in the spring, we organize and put on an Easter egg hunt for the kids in Osseo. While some years the weather cooperates more than other years, we always have a good time, the kids get more candy than is healthy, and parents get some priceless photos.
Osseo Band Shell & Concerts in the Park
The Osseo Fire Department Relief Association donated to help construct the Osseo band shell in Boerboom park, which has seen plenty of use since its construction. We also contributed to the ever-popular Concerts in the Park series, which brings a wide variety of bands to the band shell on Tuesday nights throughout the summer.
Every February, the Osseo Fire Department hosts its annual Fireman's Dance at the Osseo American Legion. Tickets are sent to all Osseo residents with a request for a donation. They are also available at the door. There is also a silent auction with many great items donated from area residents and businesses. Proceeds raised help cover fire department operating costs and to help fund community events and donations to local non-profit organizations. Come celebrate with us. If you've ever wanted to see firemen dance, this is your chance!
